Throughout the recent past there have been several science fiction dramas that have tried to gain a large audience. While they may have had interesting characters and plots, in my opinion, there has always been one reason why sci-fi related shows have not gained a large audience: aliens and unrealistic technology. Whenever you watch these shows you are bombarded by the constant jargon that the director insists defines the era depicted. Also, when have you ever watched a sci-fi show where there has not been either a drooling monster or malicious alien to botch things up? In all my life I have only seen one: Battlestar Galactica. Let me be more clear-I am not referring to the '70s version of the show where bright beings of light came down to talk to the crew. I am referring to the new and amazing version of the show released in 2003.
For those who do not know, Battlestar Galactica tells the story of some humans on the plant Caprica. The twelve colonies of Caprica originally created the robot race called the cylons. The cylons eventually rebelled from their human creators and a war was waged, ending in the cylon fleet heading deep into space searching for a new home. Forty years later, on the eve of the Battlestar Galactica's decommissioning, the cylon fleet returns in full force nuking the entire planet to smithereens. Only forty thousand humans escape under the attack of the cylons. They begin a quest through space for the fabled earth that the thirteenth colony (us) settled years ago.
Now do not think that the only purpose of the show is to chronicle the escape of some humans. There are many different characters that undergo deep changes as they deal with the issues presented. The crew must hold together to survive physically, emotionally, and mentally. Not only does the fleet have to deal with the attack but they also have to deal with the fact that the cylons have taken human form. They can walk among humans in up to twelve different "models." The show also shows the cylon's search for humanity and for the meaning of God. The cylons are not depicted as simple machines fulfilling the directives put in by the programmer. They have individual personalities. They look for answers and show the crew more about themselves with every encounter. The show even goes on to tell the audience about the civil disputes that arise in the cylon societies.
Battlestar Galactica is an amazing drama that just happens to be a Sci-Fi related show. It has character development in every episode, interesting plots, and good action. While this is a version of the future on a different planet, the jargon is kept to a minimum, which I love. Also, there are no aliens. The only living things on the show are humans, the cylons, and a few assorted animals. Too many dramas ruin their chances of being great by adding a few unnecessary creatures. Overall I would say that this show is one of the best Sci-Fi has ever put out. It has the potential to be one of the greatest dramas ever to grace the channel.
