Perhaps the best show on television today, the new Battlestar Galactica airs on the SciFi network on Friday nights. If you’re not tuning in every week to this show, you should be.

Perhaps you already are watching, in which case, thank you. You are helping to keep my favorite program on the air. But if you aren’t watching, what are you waiting for? It’s geek nirvana!

The first step to enjoying this show is to forget about the campy series from the 70s. Yes, it was a fine show for its time and I loved it dearly. But if you are going into the new series thinking it is in any way like the original, then you are in for a lot of disappointment. However, if you can get over it, you will discover an amazing new show that captivates and fascinates. And entertains!
The second step is to forget that Battlestar Galactica is a science-fiction show. No, quite the contrary. It is about the characters, their flaws, their triumphs, and most importantly, how they get along (or not) with the other characters. No laser guns. No wild reflective shiny outfits. No aliens.

You will recognize some names from the original series, but the similarities stop there. Starbuck is no longer the womanizing hotshot pilot, but rather is now the emotionally troubled female hotshot pilot. Boomer, no longer a black male Viper pilot, but rather an Asian female Raptor pilot. Colonel Tigh, no longer a black man, but rather an aging alcoholic white man. Apollo is still Adama’s son, though.
From time to time in this space I will review recent episodes of the show, so you might want to catch up. Netflix the miniseries and seasons 1, 2.0, and 2.5. Or purchase them all on iTunes. But you better hurry… a new episode will be coming soon. And I’m not going to wait for the people in the back of the class to catch up.

Also, subscribe to Ronald D. Moore’s podcast. He’s the executive producer of the show and each week he puts out a podcast that can be played with the video of the show, sort of like a “director’s comments” audio on a DVD. It is always fun to hear about how scenes were born, where they came from, why they’re in the show, and what was cut and why. Check it out.
