The Fleet

Everyone is experiencing a passage this week.

At first, The Passage title seems to refer to the jumps the humans have to make through a radiation area to get to food, but in typical Battlestar Galactica style, it seems to refer to much more.

One, of course, is a passage for Kat (Luciana Carro), as she seems to find a route through her past that returns her to a place of self respect and of leadership within the crew.

Unfortunately, Kat's passage is stuck in a rather half-hearted story.

Let's see, there was some kind of food contamination and so the Galactica pilots had to guide the civilian ships through to a planet where they could conveniently harvest material to turn into food.

And a civilian from Kat's hidden past shows up just at this time to threaten her with the secrets of her previous wicked ways. As Sasha, she was a smuggler of people. Starbuck snaps to this and, in her special Starbuck in-your-face style, threatens exposure, since Kat just might have been one of those smuggling Cylon human copies into the colonies. (This was Starbuck's weekly moment of anger and, ultimately, self-loathing.)

That plot offered nothing in the way of surprises or much excitement. Unless you really get off on scenes of the actors bouncing around in the flashing yellow strobe-lit mist. Or buy into the corny artificial emotion always generated when a show ends with a bunch of folks standing around applauding someone's act of bravery. (One of drama's hoarier clichés since An Officer and a Gentleman.)

The Passage had the distinction of using this gimmick not once but twice in the same episode. The first being when Tigh returns to the command room after his long absence. Fortunately, the Col. regards these displays with his own charming brand of no-nonsense disgust, telling everyone to knock it off and get back to their jobs. Way to go, Saul.

OK, I'm being negative today. It must be the annoyance of watching that Sci Fi channel logo for The Lost Room plastered across the screen through virtually the entire episode. All right already, we know, we know. Premieres Monday. Now can we watch Battlestar Galactica, thank you?

But it was the Cylon subplot that was the real point of interest in this episode, and perhaps the true source of the title.

Once again when see D'Anna exiting the Baltar-Caprica-D'Anna ménage a trois bed-scene (after removing Baltar's proprietary hand from her butt). "I'd love to hang around with you two all day," she says to Baltar. Now there's a ripe euphemism.

"I'll never understand what you all do all day long," Baltar says to Caprica, "Living on this thing like fleas on a cat." Baltar, finding it hard to believe that someone would voluntarily leave their bed, finally starts to wonder what D'Anna is up to. "She's been doing things," Caprica says. "Things" is right. D'Anna has been having herself executed -- suicide by robot -- so she can keep re-experiencing the dream-like (??) passage state between death and Cylon rebirth.

She wants to know what goes on in there, but can't quite remember. And of course, since everything in Baltar's universe revolves around Baltar, he believes the answers to some of his own questions, and needs, may reside there, too. Could he possibly be a Cylon and, therefore, not a slimy traitor to humanity but a hero to his own adopted people?

One more passage this week was signaled by a real stunner, an actual joke from Saul!

Adama (over rumors of starvation desperation):
"I hear they're still eating paper, is that true."

Sual (deadpan): "No. Paper shortage."

Guess Saul is beginning to recover from his Caprica blues. Takes Adama a second to realize Saul has actually cracked a joke.
