This episode opens with the promise of food, the promise of love, and the promise of salvation, but as we all know, promises are made to be broken. Down on the planet the algae gatherers take a time out, Starbuck does some fancy raptor maneuvers, and Apollo abandons Dee to contemplate an affair with Kara Thrace. They embrace, have a few hot moments, and come to a stalemate. Kara won't cheat and Lee won't leave Dee. Galen, during a work break, is drawn to an outcropping of rock. He follows his instincts and finds himself looking up at a temple of rock. Continuing the exploration, he discovers the temple off the original thirteenth colony. Entering the temple, he is awed beyond measure, and drawing on the heritage of his father and the historical studies of the Thirteenth Colony, he realizes that he has found the Eye of the Temple, the artifact written of in the ancient writings. He radios the Galactica and they send a team to examine this holy of holy sites.
They think they have found the Temple of Fire and validate their premise with carbon dating. According to the scriptures, the eye of Jupiter is a marker that points the way towards Earth. Within minutes of finding it, the Cylons appear on the horizon and the Galactica is surprised that they do not fire on them. They are outnumbered four to one.
The Cylons open communication with the Galactica. Baltar, their emissary, joins them on the Galactica along with a six, a three, and others. The Cylons come to the table to demand the Eye of Jupiter. Adama refuses and threatens that if even one aggression is made against the humans he will launch every nuclear weapon they have at the temple of the original thirteen colonies.
Sharon's Cylon counterpart (yes, I know she is a Cylon, too) is left behind while the others go into negotiations. She faces her copy and Sharon tells her she has made her choice and knows where her loyalties lie. Her counterpart informs her that her daughter, Hera, was hidden in Laura Roslin's school down on Caprica One, and was found during the exodus. She tells her that her daughter is not dead, but is alive, but ill, on the Cylon base ship. Sharon refuses to believe her, but her counterpart asserts again that she has been lied to, and is seen as a thing, not a person, by the humans. Sharon has a flicker of doubt, but refuses to believe that her baby is alive.
Down on the planet, Cylon soldiers have arrived under cover of the negotiation team. The Cylons jam transmissions to Galactica and those on the planet are helpless to communicate their dire straits. They break into two teams and attempt to construct Trinium bombs which won't be much help, but is all they can manage.
Adama confronts Laura with the information Sharon has brought to him and Laura admits that she hid the child. Adama informs Sharon and Helo and Sharon immediately demands to see her child. The betrayal she feels is evident on her face.
On the Cylon base ship, Baltar and Deanna feel a connection and realize that their destiny is inexplicably tied to each other. Deanna says that she can almost see the other five faces and Baltar hopes that his is one of them. Number Six confronts Baltar and says that she loved him when others wanted to destroy him and he replies that this is not personal, it is transcendent. Baltar and Deanna ask Caprica to pray for them as they will pray for her and feel they must be on the planet. They decide to go to the planet.
The Cylons watch as the Galactica opens their bay doors and deploys their nuclear weapons. Gaeta and Adama discuss that there is about to be a Super Nova that will destroy the planet. It may be within moments or as long as two years, but it is about to happen. He informs Adama of the signs they will have before the implosion and informs him that they will have but moments to jump away before they would be vaporized. Adama decides to make good on his threat and arms the nucs. He then informs the crew that the weapons are ready to fire. On the Cylon base ship, the Cylons feel that this is only a threat. They feel that the humans want the Eye of Jupiter as much as they do and will not destroy it.
Meanwhile, down on the planet, with Cylon soldiers amassing, Starbuck does a flyover and crashes her ship. Her husband and Apollo get into a heated argument over the rescue of Starbuck. Apollo says that he has cared about Kara for longer than her husband has known her, but they don't have the numbers to go rescue her. Her husband says that he is going to go find his wife and the two men posture and nearly come to blows.
In the temple, Galen has set charges, but his awe of the holy place has Callie mentioning to him of the difference in him. She says that he is reverent and even talks in a lowered voice. He speaks of his childhood and the religious influence in his home, and says that he spent his free time in is father's study going over the old scriptures. Alone in front of the eye, he searches for the eye. He feels connected to the temple and knows that he is within reach of this most important artifact. He stares at the engraving on the temple and tries to decipher its meaning. The scene closes, leaving us with the feeling that he has made the discovery and in just moments the humans will have the marker that points the way to Earth.
As the episode closes, Starbuck appears to be crashing. The nuclear weapons are poised to take out the temple, Laura Roslin desperately asks Adama if he is willing to end the life of his son.
