Finally, after slowly positioning the pieces in the beginning of the season, the writers have played their cards. Helo and Athena know their daughter is alive. Gaius heads to the Algae Planet to hopefully discover if he's a cylon, severely damaging his relationship with Caprica. Starbuck and Apollo's secret relationship, isn't so secret. And Admiral Adama might just blow them all up with nukes, assuming the nearby sun doesn't supernova and destroy the planet first.
What continues to impress me about the series it its clever dodging of shark-jumping events which have caused many past TV shows to tank. Not only did the show survive the jarring ending of last season, but it became better for it. It easily gained the crown of best show on TV for a good chunk of time.
In the previous two weeks, Starbuck and Apollo are revealed to have finally "done it" during the New Caprica time, and another character was killed off. These kind of plot disruptions can be hard for shows that are rooted in certain writing templates to deal with, but Battlestar's persistent narrative approach lets the writers incorporate these kind of changes rather easily.
The previews for the next episode give the impression that Anastasia will rescue Starbuck then heroically stand aside so Apollo can have the woman he wants. But I think we all know that won't be how it ends up. That would be a bit too convenient, as would more character deaths.
Hopefully, by the end of the season, they'll accomplish a few things like:
- Make Anastasia a bit more interesting. Even with the heavy suspicions about her husband, she's just not getting the writing she deserves. We still know next to nothing about her, and her screen time consists of little more than flashing sad, guilt-causing eyes at Apollo.
- With the "real" Boomer wandering around, we have some interesting possibilities with the Chief and Admiral Adama as well. Perhaps, Athena will switch places to be with her daughter? It'd be nice to see Boomer hand over an I'm-sorry-I-was-a-sleeper-cylon-agent-and-shot-you-in-the-chest-87-times Hallmark card to the Admiral.
- We really missed the last hurdle with Tigh. One minute he was a bitter, broken pilot. The next minute he was grinding those teeth behind his smile, back on the bridge again. It would be nice to see a bit of why he came back. Or at least give him more time to shine at the tail end of the year.
- Obviously, Baltar ahs to return to Galactica. It's simply too much fun watching him have decadent chats with his imaginary girlfriend while continuously being squeezed by the pressure of discovery. The cylons aren't going to kill him, even if they did, he's strayed so far, taht it wouldn't break anyone's heart. So it makes sense that he needs to come home.
- Tom Zarek is still MIA. Everyone's favorite urban terrorist turned vice-president simmering somewhere. Source Link: http://blogs.tuscaloosanews.com/default.asp?item=391022 Submitted by Zipper Talk about this article on our forum: http://galacticabbs.com/index.php?showtopic=851
