Will Starbuck's fate leave us pondering again? When the original Battlestar Galactica was cancelled after one season in 1978 allot of loose ends remained open in terms of the characters and the plot. Enter, Galactica 1980, even though this follow up show only lasted 10 episodes and was butchered by fans and the media it did contain one interesting episode, The Return of Starbuck. This episode (lets call it TROS for short) tied up the loose end of one of the original series stars, Starbuck. Played by the always engaging Dirk Benedict, Starbuck was a scoundrel of character and became a fan favorite. Dirk Benedict did not sign on to do Galactica 1980 but that did not stop the shows creator Glen Larson from creating a swan song for his character.
The plot of TROS involved a flashback by 14 year old prodigy Dr. Zee, as he recalls the story, it is several years ago and the fleet is yet again under attack by the Cylons. Starbuck’s Viper gets damaged and he crash lands on a barren planet. Soon realizing he is all aloneas he wanders around, eventually coming upon a wrecked Cylon raider with the 3 centurions deactivated. Becoming very bored Starbuck rebuilds one of the Centurions and after a rough start begins to bind with the Cylon he has named Cyrus. Later, Cyrus goes out and finds a mysterious, yet alluring pregnant women named Angela. Angela, quiet at first, insists that Starbuck and Cyrus build a small ship so herself and her baby could be safe. The ship is built and no sooner does a Cylon patrol come looking for the missing Cylons. Starbuck launches the ship with Angela into space (eventually reaching Galactica) while Starbuck and Cyrus attemp to take on the Cylons, the 3 Cylons and Cyrus get killed in the fire fight, leaving Starbuck all alone again on this desolated world, does Starbuck remain on that world forever? did he ever get off? Remember even though it was not shown, the three Cylons that came for the looking for the others must have had an intact ship parked somewhere. So was this indeed Starbucks swan song or could he ever come back. We will never find out…. Flash-forward 23 years, its 2003 and a new re-imagined version of Battlestar Galactica is about to air. Many characters have been changed around; we come to find out that Starbuck is now a woman. A talented young actress named Katee Sackoff takes the role of this cocky character known as Kara Thrace who's call sign is Starbuck. Over the last 3 years we have seen Starbuck’s character go though a lot. The beginning of season 3 finds her character traumatized after being kept prisoner by the sadistic Cylon Leoben. Kara is duped into believing that she has a daughter, when it turns out that it was a sick way for Leoben to closer to her. After being rescued by Galactica she finds out the little girl is indeed not hers and that she has been tricked all along. In the next episode, the rage in Kara has been building that she needs to take it out on someone. Her marriage to Sam Anders is on the rocks and she has been put in her place by Admiral Adama. Kara does attempt to straighten herself out, but many unresolved issues still linger including a romantic tryst she had with Lee Adama on New Caprica, feeling guilty over that tryst she gets married to Sam the next morning. She soon realizes that she has feeling for Lee and they begin a love affair that leaves them both confused over what to do next. In our last episode we discover how far Lee and Kara’s affair has progressed and that Sam and Lee’s wife Dee know what is going on. Now we wait for new episodes to start at the end of January, and some interesting facts have come to light involving Kara. At this point if you do not like spoilers cover your eyes or run into your basement……………………………………… Still there? Good. It seems that Kara will NOT be in the last three episodes of season 3. Her final episode will be ‘Maelstrom’ (February 25th, 2007). This episode heavily revolves around Kara and some of the things she has done in the past and present. The end will leave the impression to the rest of the fleet that she is dead, question is, will we get that impression also. Cast and crew are tight lipped on the plot. The rumors floating around have Kara making a comeback in Season 4 ( Scifi has yet to green light season 4, btw). Will she really be dead as the BSG promo spots seem to indicate ? Much like Starbuck from the original series will we also wonder if our Starbuck can come back as well? Time will tell if the words ‘the return of Starbuck’ will also have meaning to this series as much as it did 26 years ago.
