I don't normally spotlight miniseries (or books that are two months late), but I have to bring your attention to the just-issued "Battlestar Galactica: Zarek" from Dynamite.
The four-issue limited series focuses on Tom Zarek - the fan-favorite revolutionary played by original series actor Richard Hatch - and tells how he grew up with loving parents in the slave state that is his own Sagittaron colony and in the shadow of the First Cylon War.
As we see in the first issue, everything from the government's repressive policies to devastating personal tragedies helped slowly meld this innocent child into a ruthless rebel.
Whether or not you watch "Battlestar Galactica," you should enjoy this series. The writing of Brandon Jerwa and the stunning artwork by Adriano Batista combine to make "Zarek" a great read.
'The Iceman' cometh
Warner Bros. has announced a teaming with Chuck Liddell, aka "The Iceman," the Ultimate Fighting Championship light-heavyweight champion, to promote the film "300."
Warners kicked off the promotion by sponsoring Liddell's last Ultimate Fight in Las Vegas on Dec. 30. Liddell will reciprocate by making personal appearances and lending his name and likeness to promos leading up to the film's release.
"300" is based on the brutal graphic novel by Frank Miller depicting the ancient battle of Thermopylae in which 300 Spartans fought to the death against the massive Persian army. It opens nationwide March 9.
Del Toro seeks 'Hellboy' trilogy
Guillermo Del Toro is excited about the prospects for a "Hellboy" sequel and hopeful about having a trilogy starring the character.
"I can tell you that we may argue about budget and we may argue about size versus cost, but creatively, I have been in heaven so far," Del Toro said in an interview with RottenTomatoes.Com.
Del Toro said that since the character is now more familiar to the public, a sequel - likely to begin filming in May - will be even more successful than the first. He adds that he won't leave any loose threads unresolved at the end of the sequel.
"We always do that," he said. "We created the first one and said, 'If there's a second one, great. If there's not a second one, great.' We go into the second one the same way [and] it is my hope that we would be allowed to do [a] trilogy, but you don't know."
Jolie 'A dame to kill for'
According to ObsessedWith-Film.Com, Frank Miller has announced that Angelina Jolie will play Ava Gardner in the "Sin City" sequel.
If you have read the "Sin City" graphic novel "A Dame to Kill For," you know this is perfect casting as Gardner is a complex, manipulative seductress. Franchise fans have been hoping for Miller to land Jolie for years.
Miller also stated that the script for the sequel is ready and that he plans to have the movie in the can by the end of 2007.
