AdamaIn a recent interview with Backstage.com, Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama) and Mary McDonnell (President Roslin) chatted about their relationship on the set of "Battlestar Galactica" and about how rewarding the series has been for them as actors.

Olmos said the pilot script for the series reminded him of "Blade Runner," the 1982 Ridley Scott film in which he appears alongside Harrison Ford. Olmos says he also liked the post-9/11 themes inherent in the script.

"We went into this with a 9/11 perspective and mindset with a very strong understanding of 'Blade Runner,'" he said.

Olmos said he also got assurances from "Galactica" producers that the series would be closer in tone to "Blade Runner" than "Star Wars or "Star Trek."

"The first four-eyed creature I see, I'll faint. I will faint on camera, and I will be off the show," is what he told executive producer Ron Moore and crew about keeping the tone realistic, he said in the interview.

Olmos goes on to call the series' third season "the best television I've ever been involved with in my life."

The veteran actor, who's TV credits include "Miami Vice" and "American Family" says "Galactica" producers gave him "artistic control" of his character.

"That's been pretty nice. And Mary has total control of her (character), too," he said.

Without getting spoilery, Olmos dropped a a few hints about future eps, claiming that things will get even darker for all aboard the Galactica.

"You're not ready for what's happening on this show. ... You're not ready for where you're going to go," he said, referencing upcoming episodes.

Sunday premiere ratings low

With its first episode on a Sunday night, "Galactica" drew just 1.8 million viewers to SciFi Channel on Jan. 21, earning it a 1.4 household rating, according to Multichannel.com. This, according to SciFi Channel, is probably the series' lowest ratings night to date. Of course, it did face stiff ratings competition in the form of the Indianapolis Colts-New England Patriots NFL AFC championship game, which drew 46.7 million viewers.

On the bright side, "Galactica" was basic cable's top program for the day among adults 18-49.

You can stream Sunday night's episode, "Rapture," online at SciFi.com for free. Also, Ron Moore's podcast commentary for the episode is ready for download here.
