The teaser for this week's episode can be called nothing other than misleading. The teaser focused on Roslin and Zarek discussing the possibilities of Baltar's upcoming trial. That scene was, indeed, in the episode, but it was also almost the only scene dealing with that (other than a quick conversation between Six and Athena).
This week's episode was more self-contained than the last few have been. The gist of it was a sickness threatens refugees aboard Galactica, especially the Sagitarons who refuse medical treatment. As Sagitarons begin dying, even after seeking treatment, Helo suspects a civilian doctor is killing them.
It's not a bad story. Unfortunately, it really doesn't add much to the ongoing storyline. Helo has a long track record of being the one guy to stand up for a person or idea, whether it be marrying a cylon or murdering cylon prisoners to prevent the extinction of the cylons.
The episode even alludes to Helo's past, reminding the audience that we've seen this plot before.
The highlight of the episode was the confrontation with Helo and Tigh in the hallway after Helo appeal to Adama for help. After a few tense words, Helo punches Tigh. It's a good solid punch, but Tigh just wipes the blood off and laughs it off without ever losing his cool. At first I thought it was unrealistic, but it's actually a good reminder of Tigh's past. The guy was tortured, lost an eye and killed his wife. Is a punch really going to phase him?
Overall the writing wasn't stellar, however. Helo's always had problems carrying an episode, because even though he had plenty of screen time in the first season and some interesting moments throughout, we still no very little other than that, as he puts it, he's the guy that married a cylon. His best moment was probably his brief stand in the hallway when Sharon was scheduled to have the pregnancy terminated. Even that was too short and had little effect on the rest of the show.
Is it just me or does Helo look like the love child of Justin Timberlake and Ryan Stiles from the Drew Carey Show?
