Law Book

For Admiral Adama, it was another anniversary and chance to mourn his ex-wife. Most of the episode consisted of him dealing with images of the past. As events unfold on Galactica, Adama finally faces the important questions, was his marriage a mistake, should he pursue President Roslin?

The highlights of the episode were two small moments. Finally, Lee got a chance to really give some glimpse into his character as he told his father about life after the divorce. The previous attempts to flesh out Lee's character using the "black market" episode and the "Baltar interrogation" episode felt a bit forced. A short conversation about his mother worked well in this one though.

Finally we understand why Lee clings to his marriage so ruthlessly, despite his obvious feelings for Kara. He's determined not to make the mistake his father did and let his marriage crumble, but what he doesn't see is that he's making the mistake his mother did and convincing himself that he loves Dualla. (I guess that explains the boozing as well.) It will be interesting to watch it play out.

For Admiral Adama, it was a good episode. It's always fun to watch him throw on the steely-eyed heroic face and gravely give some outrageous command in a gravelly superwhisper. Whether it's "launch the nukes" or "blow the hatch" you know Adama's will will be done and most of those in peril will be safe after a brief action sequence.

There was one minor continuity problem. Adama give's Lee a box of his grandfather's law books. There was absolutely no reason for those books to have been in storage on Galactica. Unless Adama makes a habit out of traveling with all of his earthly possessions ... errr make that Caprican possessions, the books should have been in storage planetside. I guess we can assume Helo or Starbuck scooped those up after the attack and brought them home for brownie points.

For the Chief, the episode was a payoff to his brief allusion to marital disruption a few episodes back. A brief glimpse at his home life shows that fatherhood is taking its toll as he struggles to maintain some semblance of his marriage's dynamic before the arrival of the baby and deal with a personnel shortage. Trapped in a room with the air leaking out, the Chief and Kali find their common ground again.

Here marked the other highlight to the episode. The Chief confesses that he put Kali on his shifts because he wanted her to himself. It was a small moment, but was probably the best of the episode.

This was a decent storyline but didn't get the screentime it needed. It was a workable juxtaposition with Adama's storyline, but its potential was never fully realized. We've never had a good look into the Chief's relationship to Kali. One episode he beats her down in a mindless frenzy, the next episode, a year has passed, and they're married.

Next week, it appears that we'll get more time with the two, as the Chief is involved in a strike onboard Galactica, but who can really tell from the teaser? After the Helo episode, I'm not taking anything for granted. It could just as easily be an episode devoted to Hot Dog's mysterious rash.
