We don't normally dole out many spoilers at The Bastard Machine but if you didn't watch Sunday's "Battlestar Galactica" then you should go away. Now.

What the frak? Did they really just kill off Starbuck? Of course, the TV Critic Red Flags have gone up and are crackling like wind socks in a hurricane, but still. Damn, that was audacious. No, I don't think she's gone for good. And yes, I do have the last three episodes but no, I haven't watched them and won't. (They are not "final" and come with temp special effects which just ruins it for me. Every time I see green screen stuff I laugh out loud.).

Gone?
I doubt they'd kill off a major character like that. But if they do, remember this, all you people who whined that the previous few episodes were boring: This is your fault. Be careful what you wish for.

Now, honestly, I doubt she's dead. She allegedly has a "special destiny," or at least that's what creepy Leoben has been telling her. Two things here. 1) If that was just a ruse and her tormented, emotionally shaded character has in fact, essentially killed herself, then "BSG" gets points for going way dark and way unexpected. 2) Many fans may feel cheated if she's really not dead and will be less willing to buy into the other "BSG" mythology stuff.

What's more likely is she will indeed come back. Maybe not right away, possibly not even this season even in flashbacks. (I told you, I didn't watch and won't watch the advanced DVDs...). Killing a major character on any TV series is a risk. If it's done to get rid of someone who wants out (contract squabbles, boredom, etc.) then it's a cheap trick. If it's done to shock for sweeps, then it's another cheap trick. But if it's done to benefit the unpredictable nature of the series, then it's well played. But remember - killing off a character is still essentially the easy way out. Shock is easier than nuance. Developing a character and making them live in front of our eyes is much more difficult. I guess we'll wait and see on Starbuck. I personally thought Katee Sackhoff was superb and one of the main reasons to watch the series. She brought a lot of emotional bounce to that character. She'd be tough to replace.
