Grace Park Interview, BattleStar Galactica
Bonnie Hammer (President of the Scifi Channel) and Grace Park
Recently, at the Sci Fi upfronts, I had the pleasure of talking to Grace Park who plays Boomer on the Sci Fi Channel’s biggest sensation, the critically-acclaimed "Battlestar Galactica." (Picture with Grace Park and Bonnie Hammer, President of the Scifi Channel.)

Jerrica: How are you enjoying being on "Battlestar" this season?

Grace Park: We’re starting a new season. Last season was fantastic. It’s so continuously astounding with the writing, with the effects. You know, having so many political science writers on the show makes it fresh, intellectual and yet they’re coming up with storylines that are constantly deepening and surprising, and it’s pulling at your heart strings. You know, it’s not cut and dry, and it’s not a freaky tale.

J: What’s your favorite part about what they’ve done with your character so far?

GP: Oh my God.

J: I know it’s a loaded question.

GP: [laughs] Uh... I think some of the things that I liked in the beginning were the killer endings, the cliffhanger endings that they would leave us with. Twice in a row, and I thought for "Well for sure, nothing’s going to happen with Sharon in Season Two because that would become predictable. And it was quite good the first two times anyway, because though she is a leading figure, she’s not Starbuck, and she’s not Apollo, or the President, or Adama, right?

She’s a robot. I think for many reasons people do like to overlook that character, and depending on if you’re the type to fight for the underdog then I think you’ll have to look more towards more characters like the Cylons.
J: Do you know what’s going to happen so far in advance or do you just get the script and you have no idea what’s going on?

GP: All I know is what happens in the finale. And that’s only hours away.

J: And that’s absolutely classified, correct?

GP: It pretty much is. I’d just like to say that there’s a Pandora’s box about to be opened.

J: What’s the fun of working on the set? It’s such heavy material. Do you guys have fun when you’re filming the scenes, do you try to lighten it up a little?

GP: The cast is so warm. I almost feel guilty being in a bad mood, because Eddie and Mary are... I mean, Eddie’s a big teddy bear. Mary’s so great, just full of laughter and warmth, and the cast is really grounded, really loving. We have a lot of new families, a lot of very creative, talented, yet grounded, generous people; generous in work, generous at play.

We call each other when parties are going on, events are going on. We’re always getting together, and I think that really makes for a good family, a good team, and a wonderful work environment. And only having been on another series before, I felt that this was just something really amazing, but constantly hearing from other people coming in like this is an oddity, this is really weird.
J: Are you doing anything else at the moment?

GP: I just did a play in Vancouver that I finished up a little while ago. And, I did a film called "West 32nd" which is coming out at the Tribeca Film Festival pretty soon in New York.

J: That’s exciting!

GP: It’s very exciting. I haven’t done a full feature film before. And, I’ve been really in love with it because it’s really this love story between Korean and American cultures, and the story itself is not a love story, but that’s the part getting behind it. And, it’s a seduction of someone growing up in America and being lured back into their own culture, but at a price.

J: Okay, last question; what’s your favorite moment for your character on "Galactica"?

GP: I really like... this is a moment that I hated filming, but I was really surprised watching it, I really enjoyed it. It was actually when Athena and Boomer talk to each other, and Boomer reveals to her that her child is really alive. And I was really thrilled watching it.

Grace was bursting with energy and very friendly. It was great talking to her, and "Galactica" fans can look forward to seeing next season, and you can see its "Boomer" in her first feature film coming soon.
