Totally Frakked: Will We Ever Get A "Battlestar Galactica" Movie? By Liz Lacy
As is inevitably the case when a popular show announces its end, people are speculating on the idea of a "Battlestar Galactica" movie. Ronald Moore and David Eick have said up front that they're excited about the idea, and it seems fairly clear that there's a market for it. So, are all systems go? Well, not yet, no. It seems there's an intergalactic party pooper, and his name is Glen Larson.
Larson, creator of the original raygun-toting, swash-buckling, space opera, isn't exactly thrilled with the gritty, politically focused redux. He also holds the rights for any "Galactica" film, and has since the 70s. No one can argue that "BSG" is his baby, but will he fold and let the next generation bring their vision to the big screen? IESB reports that Larson remains keen on making a movie based on his original show. Whether he's canny enough to realize what a terrible idea that would be is anyone's guess.
At this point, it seems unlikely that Moore and Eick will get the go ahead to make their own film. There's already been trouble over the "Razor" movie. The 2-hour story of the Pegasus was originally created for release to DVD, but had to be shuffled to small screen release over rights issues. So, is there any chance? We'll keep our fingers crossed.
