Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 Panel Highlights
Jamie Bamber, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff

Not too long ago, Sci-Fi Channel's golden child, the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, announced that their upcoming 4th season would be their last. Last Wednesday, NBC/Universal and Sci-Fi Channel put together a one-time only Battlestar Galactica All-Access Special Event, and your friends at G4tv.com were there!

Lucky fans were treated a special screening, followed by a panel that included Executive Producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, as well as stars Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Jamie Bamber, and Katee Sackhoff.

While plenty of BSG fans wanted desperately to know who the final Cylon is or what Earth will be like when we find it, the question everyone really wanted answered was, "Why is this the last season?"

Executive Producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick made clear that it was their decision to bring the show to close and that they were ending the story on their terms, assuring themselves (and us) that the story would not be cut off prematurely.

Edward James Olmos expressed his displeasure that the show was ending, insisting that the significance of the series won't fully be appreciated for another 20 years. He went on to express that BSG was the first piece of film or television to truly walk through the door that Bladerunner opened some 25 years ago.

Some people pondered the notion that the panel was put together as a last minute effort to try and garner some attention from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the slim hope of an Emmy nomination.

I say "slim hope" not because the show isn't worthy of of such consideration or recognition. Far from it. The re-imagined Battlestar Galactica is and has been the most well-written drama on Television since it's premiere in 2003. It has challenged it's viewers to think about what they are watching and at the same time held up a mirror to what is happening in our own lives.

Battlestar Galactica returns to television in November with a two hour presentation, "Razor". The 4th and final season of BSG will air early in 2008.
