'Galactica' star plans to jettison the role for good

As the Sci Fi Channel's popular "Battlestar Galactica" draws to an end after four seasons, star Katee Sackhoff, who plays Starbuck, knows exactly what she's swiping from the set on her last day.

"My flight suit and my helmet and my gun belt," Sackhoff told reporters. "I'm going to bronze that flight suit and put it in my bathtub so when someone comes over and showers, they have to stand next to it. It was hell for so many years, it's only appropriate that I get to take it with me."

"Battlestar Galactica" is an edge-of-your-seat saga about the last remnants of humanity fighting for survival against a race of robot Cylons. Their last hope rests in finding planet Earth.

Season four premieres April 4 at 10.

The "Battlestar" franchise began in the 1970s and endured several reiterations before being reimaged and picked up as a three-hour miniseries by Sci Fi in 2003. The miniseries was so successful, the network decided to go ahead with a television series the next year. Last season, "Battlestar" averaged about 2 million viewers. "It redefined our channel," said Mark Stern, executive vice president of original programming for the Sci Fi Channel. "It's really allowed us to achieve what we set out to achieve, which is to broaden the channel and the viewership of the channel, and also the perception of the channel.

"'Battlestar' is interesting in that it's a bit of a contradiction," Stern said. "On its surface it seems like a very straightforward science fiction space opera, but if you spend any time with it at all, you quickly realize that it is also a lot more than that. It's a really intense character drama that also happens to be in space."

Sackhoff agrees.

"We never relied on the science fiction of the show to guide it. We relied on the drama and the human condition, and all of those really important questions," she said. "Most science fiction shows rely too much on the bells and whistles."

Sci Fi recently said it will do a two-hour movie, a prequel to "Battlestar," entitled "Caprica," but Sackhoff is not involved, nor should fans expect to see her as Starbuck again once the series has ended.

"When I, as an actor, am done with a show, I'm done with the show," said Sackhoff. "As much as I love the job or don't love the job, the last thing I want to do is come back and do it again. Granted, talk to me in five years if I haven't worked, but as of right now I have no desire to do a movie."
